ART of FALLING
Olay Ünlü, Yigit Güldoğan, Arda Yaman
Art of Falling is a four-day retreat program that approaches falling as both a physical and mental skill.
The program is conducted with the guidance of three facilitators.
Physical practices approach the moment of falling not as a threat, but as a form of communication; they focus on re-establishing the participant’s relationship with the ground, gravity, their own center of mass, and personal boundaries.
Mental sessions, on the other hand, remind us that falling is not only a physical experience, but also an emotional and cognitive process. These sessions create space for reflection on surrender, resistance, defense mechanisms, ways of relating, and unconscious responses.
Topics we focus on include:
• Contact with the ground: recognizing the ground not as an opposing force, but as a supportive surface.
• Balance and coordination: strengthening bodily awareness, moving between control and release.
• Strength and flexibility: supporting the body with safe movement patterns, enhancing centering.
• Play: seeing falling not as a failure, but as a space of exploration; trying, failing, rebuilding, and enjoying.
• Group insight: engaging with the presence of others, observing individual processes within a collective space.
• Contact with the unconscious: making space for emotions evoked by movement, and inner narratives that arise through imagery.
• The Other: questioning the nature of relationships formed with others.
• Space: realizing that emotions can be expressed not only intellectually, but also spatially and physically.
Each day includes two movement classes—one in the morning and one in the afternoon—combining practices that strengthen and stretch the body, along with group insight work. Materials and tools related to the topics explored will be shared with participants throughout the process.
This program goes beyond physical contact with the body and opens space for rethinking one’s relationship with oneself. No prior knowledge or experience is required. It is open to all levels.
